The "Yankee Clipper Chorus" is the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, formerly called the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). The Portsmouth chapter was founded in January, 1977, when Jim Dodge, Ron Menard and Dave Engel met to discuss forming a chapter in the Portsmouth area. Drawing on their many years of experience in Barbershopping and good old Yankee know-how, they spread the news by newspaper advertisement and word of mouth, and the first meeting was held on January 24, 1977, at the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth.

The first meeting had five people attending plus a guest quartet called "The Adventurers." It was decided to have meetings on Mondays and that a permanent meeting place was needed. This came in February when the "Barber Shoppers" held their meeting at the Mormon Church. Meeting nights were soon changed to Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm which seemed to be a better night for many of the members.

New members began to show up and soon there were twenty persons attending. Over the last 26 years the chorus has successfully enjoyed singing and good fellowship. Currently our home is the Advent Christian Church on the corner of State and Summer streets.
